The Completed Sword

Assuming that a sword is correctly assembled and suitable for stage combat, there remains one final attribute to consider: its “feel”—the way it handles.

The center of balance is easy to find. Balance the sword across a finger and note where the blade comes to rest. The farther that point lies from the hand, the more presence the blade will have. It may carry greater authority through a cut, but it will also be harder to start, stop, and redirect. A balance point closer to the hand generally makes the sword feel lighter and more agile.

Balance point alone, however, does not determine handling. Two swords of the same weight and with the same center of balance may feel quite different because that weight is distributed differently along their lengths.

Sword makers and enthusiasts often discuss center of percussion, vibration nodes, blade harmonics, and the weapon’s “sweet spot.” These are legitimate but complicated subjects, and the terminology is not always used consistently. None provides a simple measurement of whether a sword will handle well in stage combat.

The practical test is whether the actor can control the weapon. Can it be brought into motion without strain? Can it be stopped accurately, redirected cleanly, and recovered without pulling the performer off balance? Does it remain manageable through the complete choreography rather than merely feeling impressive for the first few movements?

When receiving blade contact, the forte—the strong portion nearest the hilt—provides the greatest leverage and control. Contact farther toward the point gives the opposing blade increasing leverage over the actor’s hand.

There is no universally correct weight or balance point for a stage sword. The completed weapon must be judged in relation to the actor, the choreography, and the demands of the production.

“Wait a minute. Doesn’t that mean that the most powerful part of the cut would be at the very tip of the sword?” Well, the tip is certainly moving fastest. But speed alone does not make an effective cut. The farther contact moves toward the tip, the more easily the blade can bend, twist, or be knocked out of alignment. Instead of biting cleanly, it may scrape or glance past the target. That may be perfectly useful for a passing slice, but it is unreliable for a strong cut. The best compromise between blade speed and dependable contact is generally found somewhat behind the tip, around the juncture of the middle and the foible.

            So, to summarize: The best spot to absorb a blow is at the forte near the hilt. The best spot with which to cut is at the juncture of mid-blade and foible.
